How do I train my dog to walk in front of me but not pull on the leash?

First be sure you don’t have him in a harness. A harness is designed for pulling and there’s no way to discourage him if he does pull. Put him in a martingale, slip collar or prong (don’t even start - prong collars are not sharp, they cannot penetrate, they are not cruel or inhumane). These need to be fitted so that they are way up high directly under his chin, pressing only on muscle and not slipping down to the middle of his neck. On your own neck, try pressing into both areas and see which one hurts.

Just allow him to walk until he starts to lean on the leash. Get right on this and don’t wait until he’s towing you like a water-skier. If he’s relatively sensitive, pop the leash and say, Easy! If that doesn’t work after a few tries, say Easy! and change direction suddenly. Keep doing that. Praise him when your “Easy” results in him backing off the leaning.

I’m shutting off comments because pet owners who are not trainers will raise a fuss about the suggestion of a prong collar or even popping the lash. They will say these are cruel. But I will tell you what’s really cruel: teaching your dog to lean on the leash, with a flat collar crushing his trachea, and then after he spends a year or more thinking this is what you wanted - he pulled, you followed - you turn around and decided that was no good and he had to relearn the whole thing. That’s what’s cruel.
