For combat-oriented players in Dune: Awakening, sandstorms present unique challenges that test both fighting skill and survival instincts. Visibility is drastically reduced, making ranged combat far less effective. As a result, melee fighters may find themselves at an advantage in close-quarters situations.

Preparation for storm combat begins with equipment choice. Use armor with high abrasion resistance and helmets with built-in visors to maintain vision during sand exposure. Carry weapons that are less affected by sand interference, such as blades or short-range firearms.

When a storm begins, quickly assess whether to engage or disengage. In many cases, survival outweighs victory. Retreating to a fortified position allows you to preserve resources and avoid unnecessary injury. If you do engage, stay low and use terrain to shield yourself from wind blasts.

Communication with allies is crucial. In multiplayer environments, storms can easily scatter squads, so setting rally points before the weather shifts can prevent separation. Use short, pre-agreed signals to indicate movement since long-distance shouting will be drowned out by the wind.

Combat during storms also requires patience. Allow enemies to make mistakes due to low visibility, such as exposing themselves while trying to navigate. Use these openings to strike decisively.

When pinned down, deploy portable cover devices or shields to block incoming fire and reduce sand impact. This creates safe zones for healing, reloading, or regrouping with teammates.

Keep in mind that storms affect AI behavior as well. Hostile creatures and NPCs may become more aggressive or disoriented. Use this to your advantage by luring them into ambushes where the weather does half the work for you.

Once the storm clears, immediately assess your gear and replenish supplies. Combat in a sandstorm is draining, and recovery is vital before the next engagement. Always treat the post-storm period as both a time to regroup and a chance to counterattack enemies still weakened by the harsh conditions.
